1. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey

One of the protein powders best rated is Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard 100% Whey and is a clear favourite, whether it is a protein powder for women or men. For one, Optimum Nutrition has made a name for itself as the go-to when it comes to protein powders in the UK and outside of the country. It won the 2018 Best Protein Powder in the Men’s Health Magazine in the UK’s Sports Nutrition Award. It’s been winning awards constantly right and left including and 18 year award from Bodybuilding.com. Manufactured in the US, you can easily get this from their site, Amazon and other reputable shopping sites. . Let’s get break it down to why Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey is a part of our list.

Flavour

While others might think that flavour should be the last factor to consider when choosing a protein shake, it is nonetheless one of the reasons why fitness and health buffs stay with it. We have mixed reactions when it comes to ON Gold Standard flavour because its taste depends on what you prefer. The double rich chocolate might seem like it was dark chocolate, so do not be surprised to find that it tastes a bit bitter. On the other hand, the other flavours, banana and cake batter are tad sweet for us. So, if you want the chocolate but get turned off by the bitter taste, you can always mix it with milk and go from there in mixing according to your taste. As of writing, it has other flavours other than the three that we have tried. Also, it has a gritty texture that might make you gag, so be prepared for it. But when you get past that along with a palatable mixture of your own, you’ll get the benefits just right.

Protein Blend

A protein powder drink is deemed essential when it comes to fitness because of its ingredients. In fact, it should be the most important factor that you should think about. Its protein content and other essential ingredients are the most impressive among the others we have tried. We are assuming, this is why it is number one.

As we all know (in case we needed a reminder), whey is a huge component in a whey protein diet, with 24 grams in a 5 pound tub. Its whey component has a mix of whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, and hydrolysed whey protein isolate. In this case, you have the best of the worlds. Whey protein isolate is low in fat, lactose, and carbohydrates. It is usually 90% protein. Whey protein concentrate contains low levels of fat and carbohydrates. Its protein content depends on how concentrated it is, hence the name. On the lower end, it can go as low as 30% whereas higher end can contain up to 90%. In whey protein hydrolysate, the lactalbumin is broken down into fractions so it gets absorbed faster, so those with sensitivities will not have an allergic reaction.

If you prefer a specific blend of protein, then ON’s Gold Standard 100% Whey is not for you. It will really depend on your needs.

Other Essential Ingredients

Yes, it is called a protein powder drink, but protein is not the only ingredient you should watch out for. BCAA or Branched-chain Amino Acids are also key ingredients of a good protein powder. ON Gold Standard 100% Whey has 5.5g of it. This is especially essential for athletes and for anyone wanting to build muscles. However, this is not to say this is only limited to those who try any extensive training. BCAA’s function is to stimulate protein building in muscles, and that is something that one needs even with simple muscle fatigue.

Another ingredient is an amino acid called glutamine. Glutamine additionally helps in protein production, but other than that it helps rebuild muscles as a result of stressful or strenuous activities. When we do extensive activities, there is wear and tear on the skeletal muscles. This is where glutamine comes in, with ON Gold Standard 100 Whey it has 4g of glutamine and glutamine acid.

Effects

No doubt, Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey is one of the protein powders best choice. When you are on a high intensity workout or training, this should be one of your choices and on top at that. After all, it will not be on top of everyone’s preferred brand if it did not deliver. And yes, for us it delivered quite well when it comes to strength, energy and regeneration. Clearly, it is number one because of multiple guarantees that it works, whether you are a professional athlete or the casual fitness gym goer.

2. MyProtein – The Whey

MyProtein’s The Whey joins our list of the best this year. Just a bit of background of the makers of The Whey, MyProtein is a sports nutrition company but products are not limited to sports nutrition products. However, The Whey caught our attention not just because it packs a good punch in the protein direction, but it’s also vegan. Let’s find out more.

Flavour

If we are to choose between ON’s Gold Standard and The Whey, we would choose The Whey. It has a milky taste that is much more pleasant than ON’s gritty and sweet tasting flavour and texture. Maybe because we prefer the milky flavour and love the prospects of a milkshake rather than something that you need to drink because it works well with training. So, it tastes like a treat compared to the others. However, if you’re not into drinking milk, then you would most definitely not like this. We have tried the unflavoured one because we wanted to mix it in with a smoothie, but the cookies and cream is as tasty as well. The problem usually with flavouring is that it’s almost always made of sucrose, or sugar in table terms, so it tends to be too sweet and that sweetness is as you can imagine, diabetic-death sweet. But this one isn’t like that at all. A protein shake diet will suit you with this brand because it is less in sugar. Mocha is also a favourite maybe because it’s a close taste to coffee, but we were tempted to taste the fruity flavours too like the Raspberry and it did not disappoint.

MyProtein definitely knows how to handle flavour and maintains its highest advantage compared to anything ON’s. All in all, The Whey is the best when it comes to mixing it with other flavour and it will come out similar to your milkshake. And we are fans of milkshakes! As of writing, there are 40 flavours for you to try.

Protein Blend

MyProtein’s The Whey contains 25g of protein but the 1 kilo bag only contains 21g of protein. With The Whey, its whey protein isolate is at 70%, but also contains concentrate and hydrolysate similar to ON’s. However, the percentage of isolate, concentrate and hydrolysate differs from flavour to flavour, so choose with caution and be meticulous to match your goals.

Furthermore, the milky flavour is due to the concentrate which contains milk and soy. Those who are lactose intolerant and those with sensitivities might not want this, however, it has been said that the amount is too little enough to cause any reaction at all. But, it is better to err on the safe side.

On the plus side, this is one of the protein powders vegans can choose from, though there are quite a few in the market, we of course recommend what we have tested.

Other Essential Ingredients

Unlike ON’s the BCAA of The Whey is a teeny bit lower. It contains 4.5g of BCAA per scoop. Other than that it also contains 1g of carbohydrates, 1.9g of fat that totals to 103 calories per serving only. Many of you would stay away from carbohydrates especially when you are trying to lose weight. You can get these naturally from whole foods, but if you don’t mind 103 calories per serving, then this choice should be fine.

3. SiS – Rego Rapid Recovery Protein

SiS or Science in Sport is also a leading sports nutrition manufacturer and it has the Informed Sport Certification clearly stating all its ingredients and its close monitoring of banned substances. Its Rego Rapid Recovery Protein is also among the favourites. But among the few that we have tried, SiS ups the notch by talking about something else other than protein, recovery and BCAA. So, there are quite a few things that are different with how things are with SiS but we are liking it just the same.

Flavour

SiS Rego Rapid Recovery Protein has a malty taste. Compared to The Whey, we didn’t like the taste on this one. Maybe because we are partial to milkshakes that this one didn’t really sit well on the palate. We found this to be an acquired taste, so to speak. However, I wouldn’t cross this one off the list because this might not be the same case with you. For all we know, you love the malty taste. It is available in different flavours as well, so the experience might be different with every flavor. Ours was in chocolate.

Protein Blend

SiS Rego Rapid Recovery Protein is made up of soy protein isolate. But with SiS Rego, they’re very transparent about the carbohydrate it contains. As with most people, carbohydrates tend to scare off drinkers. Protein powder users are conscious of the weight gain and carbohydrate is an ingredient that they avoid. But with SiS Rego, it is branded as a protein-carbohydrates drink. In a one kilogram of SiS Rego, there is 23g of carbohydrates and only 20g of protein. Its BCAA has 2g of leucine, an amino acid that is responsible for metabolic function and protein synthesis, which means speeding up of protein production in the muscles.

In addition to that, it’s perfect for vegetarians and lactose intolerant because its protein is made up of soy.

SiS Rego Rapid Recovery Protein Ingredients

Other Essential Ingredients

SiS Rego Rapid Recovery Protein is very meticulous when it comes to their ingredients. In the site, they have listed down even the vitamins and minerals included in a one kilo of the product. Something that is uncommon in others. It gives us the impression that although it contains carbohydrates, it also has added vitamins and minerals needed for better body functioning. Also, another ingredient that caught our attention is the fibre content that aids in digestion as well as a better carbohydrate choice than the rest. Sugar was also laid out for everyone to see.

Price

The 1.6 kilogram tub is £25.60 with free delivery in the UK with Amazon.

Effects

The name Rapid is there for a reason and it does not lie. We experienced no delayed onset muscle soreness or called DOMS after a rigorous exercise. Most of us would be tempted to stop training after muscle soreness and because it just hurt too much. But with Rego Rapid Recovery Protein, we’re even more motivated to continue and expand our limits. As long as you can take the taste, then this one is a good choice for intense training. This is our choice for protein shake after workout.

4. Power Crunch Proto Whey

The Power Crunch Proto Whey was easy to include in our list and for a lot of reasons. Our first impression of it is that it might be too “soft” for intense training because if looks could be the deciding factor, this one looks like it’s a formula brand. But we were proved wrong on so many levels.

Flavour

This is delicious. There is no other way to describe it. No fancy mixing and additional ingredients required, this tastes really good standalone. However, milk would be a perfect blend with this as well as oats with your preferred fruit. The only bummer in flavour is that it only comes in two flavours, vanilla crème and double chocolate.

To conclude, if we are to choose between The Whey and Proto Whey, we choose Proto Whey for flavour. Just can’t get enough of it!

Protein Blend

Proto Whey® contains 20g of protein, but the protein it contains is a specialised Micro Peptides™ High-DH whey protein hydrolysate. The hydrolysate state of whey protein means it is broken down into smaller pre-digested fractions. This means a lot of benefits compared to the other whey types. For one and one that is quite known about it is that of its low allergenicity. In other terms, sensitivities to whey. Digging through their story, this is why the branding looks like it’s a formula brand rather than a sports protein powder brand. Their product line also includes drink for children. But we digress. What this really means is that for those with allergies that are concerned about health and fitness can also take advantage of the benefits of protein powders.

Furthermore, Proto Whey® also includes 40% of Amino Acids Dipeptide and Tripeptide that are easily absorbed by the body to counter the effects faster of muscle breakdown during exercise. We’ve always wondered about what those amino acids are there for because the other protein powders don’t usually advertise it. This one is our go-to protein shake to lose weight because of the hydrolysate component.

Proto WHey Ingredients

Other Essential Ingredients

An interesting added ingredient is the fibre registered as SoftPsil, a micronized psyllium fibre. Being a fibre, we assume that it aids in the digestion that are usually a problem with protein powders because of sensitivities. Other than that, it is also transparent that it uses sugar fructose and sucralose.

Price

The 2.1 pound tub Vanilla Crème costs £52.85 on Amazon. Unfortunately, no free delivery for this product.

Effects

When talking about energy, Proto Whey did not disappoint. We noticed longer capacity in the gym when taken before working out as was advised by some we know who have tried the product, so we did.

5. Organic Grass-Fed Whey

If you’re vegan, you’d be happy to know that we have an organic choice in the list. Not only that, Organic Grass-Fed Whey is the quintessential less is more adage product as you will soon find out. Made by the Organic Protein Company, it’s as organic as it gets and is quite a favourite amongst the vegans and vegetarians. Its “boost and recover” slogan is true to its purpose but unlike the rest of protein powders, this product is less on grit like most sports-centred slogans out there.

Flavour

Surprisingly and to be honest, we thought this was going to taste bland. But it had a creamy flavour that you would not normally taste in a protein powder sports drink. It takes a while to blend it though, but to save some time just put it in the blender or nutribullet to have a go quickly. By then, you’d have a smooth and creamy drink at the same time.

In addition, it was so creamy that we tried it as an additive to what we are eating like oats and yoghurt. As expected, flavour in the food tasted like a treat. So, the only problem you will have is to choose whether to drink it or bake it with your goodies. You can also try their Raw Cacao and Maca and Raspberry and Baobab if you wanted variation from the Pure Unflavoured that we tried.

Protein Blend

The Organic Grass-Fed Whey has 19.25g of protein per 25g serving. Also another good choice for vegetarians. It has all the essential BCAAs but even more so listed than the rest in the list. Most important, it only has one essential ingredient, whey that comes from organic grass-fed cows, no fuss whatsoever.

organic whey protein ingredients

Other Essential Ingredients

There are no other ingredients in the Organic Grass-Fed Whey at all. No artificial additives, sugars and other stuff. However, we especially like it that they took the time to explain that even without the additives, you’re getting the necessary essentials from a single ingredient. All the BCAAs, the vitamins and minerals are even more extensive a list than the rest, owning its adage of less is more. So, if you’re looking for protein powders without sweeteners, this would be a good option.

Effects

The most interesting and admirable fact about Organic Grass-Fed Whey from The Organic Protein Company is that this protein powder is not just for the intensive training folks but a food supplement that aims to help you get healthy. In some cases, it is used to help patients recover their strength, in so many creative ways possible!

As for us, strength is the game and we got it from this protein powder. We tried this protein shake for breakfast before working out an intensive weightlifting game. We’ve had some doubts at first, but we were able to held up as expected.

All in!

We’ve got everything covered coincidentally. There is something for the vegetarian, vegan, sports intensive, athlete, and even the relaxed ones. Not surprising that most would look for protein powders best for weight loss, but we say all the protein powder brands in our list fit that objective. But to get the most out of that objective choose your sugar and carbohydrates risk factor. However, we do not want to cross out the possibility that you are also here to look at protein powders to gain weight or recover from a malady. A protein powder will depend on your health and fitness goals. In this list, you will find out what you can do with each.
